Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Has Reopened — Is It Better Than Before?

After more than a year behind construction walls, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is finally back at Magic Kingdom — and Disney fans have been eagerly waiting to see what changed!

Magic Kingdom is currently going through a lot of changes, especially in Frontierland and Liberty Square. That means there hasn’t been much drawing guests over to this side of the park lately. Not only is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad a beloved family coaster, but its reopening now gives crowds a reason to migrate back over to Frontierland. This is huge! And it also means your Magic Kingdom ride strategy may need a few tweaks.

When Did Big Thunder Mountain Reopen?

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened at Magic Kingdom on May 3, 2026. The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness originally closed on January 6, 2025 for an extensive refurbishment.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad received a very welcome overhaul with brand-new tracks, refreshed trains, and new special effects!

What Changed on Big Thunder Mountain?

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad received a ton of updates during this refurbishment. While the queue has been refreshed, it overall looks about the same. One bonus is that you now have a really nice view of the Piston Peak construction progress from the queue.

The real changes, though, are on the ride itself.

New Height Requirement

Before Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed for refurbishment, the height requirement was 40 inches. Thanks to the brand-new track and refreshed trains, the minimum height requirement has now been lowered to 38 inches.

New Smoother Track

The new track makes a HUGE difference on this ride! Gone are the days of being shaken and thrown all over the place. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad now glides along the tracks. Think more similar to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

On Ride Special Effects

Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad used to lack some of the special effects found in Disneyland’s version, but now it has even more!

When the ride first starts out, be prepared for A LOT of bats! Disney really upped this scene, and it immediately grabs your attention. Next up, the Rainbow Caverns are absolutely stunning. And I can’t forget about the climactic new scene featuring a massive golden nugget.

Is Big Thunder Mountain More Intense Now?

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is still a great family coaster, but it now leans even more toward a starter thrill ride. The track is so smooth that I personally thought the ride actually felt slower than the previous version. It still has thrills, but they don’t feel quite as scary for little ones.

Best Time to Ride Big Thunder Mountain Right Now

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently one of the most popular attractions in Magic Kingdom. It has been severely missed, and the crowds definitely show it.

This ride is an excellent choice for a Tier 1 Lightning Lane selection. Standby wait times are likely going to remain high until some of the reopening excitement dies down.

For the shortest standby wait, I highly recommend rope dropping this ride. Frontierland does not open during early entry, so you actually have a pretty fair shot at getting there right when it opens, even if you don’t qualify for early entry.

Opening day crowds

I rope dropped Big Thunder Mountain on reopening day, and while I still waited 55 minutes, the line had already jumped to 145 minutes by the time I got off around 10:00 AM. My rope drop wait was still significantly better than waiting later in the day.

Another great time to ride with shorter standby waits is during the fireworks or right before park closing. At those times, you typically have fewer Lightning Lane guests entering the queue, which helps the standby line move much quicker.

Is Big Thunder Mountain Worth Prioritizing?

Absolutely! Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is one of those classic Magic Kingdom attractions that appeals to almost everyone. It’s thrilling enough to feel exciting, but not so intense that most families need to avoid it.

With the smoother track and updated effects, this coaster honestly feels better than ever. The ride experience is much more enjoyable now, especially for anyone who used to walk off feeling rattled around.

And while the updates are impressive during the day, I still think nighttime is the best way to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Flying through the mountain in the dark while seeing the lights of Magic Kingdom around you is hard to beat.

The new track is so smooth!

This reopening also changes crowd patterns in Magic Kingdom quite a bit. During the closure, Frontierland felt noticeably quieter. Now that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is back, expect this area of the park to feel much busier throughout the day. That means ride strategies that worked over the last year may not work as well anymore.

If Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is high on your must-do list, it’s definitely something you’ll want to prioritize early in the day or grab as a Lightning Lane selection.

Tips for Riding Big Thunder Mountain with Kids

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is one of the best “first coaster” attractions at Walt Disney World. It’s fast enough to feel exciting, but it doesn’t have any huge drops or inversions.

The new 38-inch height requirement also means more little ones can finally experience this ride.

A few things parents should know before riding:

  • The ride is bumpy in theme, but much smoother than before the refurbishment.

  • There are several quick turns and sudden movements, but nothing extreme.

  • Younger kids may still get nervous because the ride is loud and fast in certain sections.

  • Sitting toward the front of the train tends to feel slightly less intense than the very back.

If you have a child who is unsure about thrill rides, I actually think this is now a better starter coaster than Space Mountain. The smoother track makes a huge difference, and being outdoors helps make the ride feel less overwhelming for many kids.
